About Rain Essex

Rain Essex is an Alaska Native (Tlingit & Haida) Electronic Music producer, Vocalist, & DJ from Anchorage, Alaska. Since laying her foundation in 2013 starting out as a Trap & Dubstep DJ playing events across Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, Rain has evolved into fast-paced dance music as she explores crossing alternative style vocals with Drum and Bass & Techno. Military school graduate, Berklee College of Music Alum, & University of Alaska Anchorage Jazz vocalist, Rain never really fit in the box everyone tried to put her in. “I struggle a lot but music is the one thing I don't struggle with, I would wake up in the middle of the night with a melody in my head or vocals I need to put down -it flows. I just want to create a space for those like me because its okay to be yourself even if it isn't what everyone else is doing.” Rain has started a women ran experimental electronic record label called Audio Alt-ar, hoping to create a space for misfits alike in the electronic music industry while creating her own brand as an artist.

Rain's Experience

I’ve been a DJ since 2013 – touring throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest throughout my career. I’ve also done featured mixes for C89.5 in Seattle, Washington. I’ve played every type of venue from a dive bar, a treehouse stage at a music festival, a dome, an amphitheater, and more with a lot of live and live troubleshooting experience. I have directly opened up for artists like Black Tiger Sex Machine, Adventure Club, Dev, Wuki, Evan Giia, and Kandy to name a few. In 2018 I attended University of Alaska – Anchorage and received a ground foundation of performing Jazz Vocals before transferring to Berklee College of Music in 2019 for Electronic Music & Sound Design where I learned most of my production skills. I have recorded other people in a studio environment & recorded my own vocals for others. While attending school, I was DJing locally 3 nights a week as well as curating my own event on Wednesdays called The Unknown where I would host the event as an MC, book talent, create flyers, and market the event online myself as well as create promotional videos and photograph the event for future marketing material. During the 2020 pandemic I brought The Unknown event online in the live streaming space and worked with artists all over the globe to curate the same type of event where DJ’s would send me their sets and I would host their sets and interview them live after. One of the shows I got together a group to do the same, but to raise money for Women in Afghanistan during the pullout of troops to Women for Women International so they would have safe ways to communicate – it was small but we managed to raise about $500 usd which I was proud of. I also created a beat making competition called Beat Cafe where on Sundays I would give everyone a sample and they’d have an hour to create something with it. I would interview, talk about upcoming releases with the artists participating, and then have the online crowd vote for their favorite creations. In these online events I worked with electronic artists like Kumarion (US), Sømething (US), rSun (US), Olysounds (US), Deepstate (US), Yash Bansel (AUS), Onlythenext (Ukraine), Not U (Spain), and more. In 2022 I decided to start my own record label called Audio Altar to release my own music under where I plan out my releases, create music videos – shoot, direct, edit, upload; create merchandise, and market online all the labels releases. My goal is to eventually get others on the label as well and host events but its a small project at the moment. For my future, I would love to either tour as an artist and/or be a studio manager. I really want to relocate out of Alaska as there is not much opportunity here – to the UK or anywhere I can find better work.
