About Mesmi Music

mesmi is a trailblazer in music—an artist who also produces/engineers, she believes in uplifting her fellow female, AAPI & POC communities as part of her creative journey. She currently works as a producer, songwriter, artist and consultant in Los Angeles. Constantly growing, mesmi's skills have expanded from her early singer/songwriter origins into music recording. Through her company VATOCA Studios, she offers specialized services such as vocal production, mixing and music consulting, and is able to bring an acute blend of both creative detail and big-picture strategy from her own artist journey and wide-reaching professional experience. As someone who encountered numerous hurdles as a woman in music, she founded VATOCA Studios based on the desire to use her studio skills in aiding other artists, especially other women in the music industry. (http://vatocastudios.com & https://about.me/vatoca) mesmi's songs have seen placements in shows such as "Good Trouble" (Hulu), and she is currently being mentored by acclaimed producer 9th Wonder (Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu) through Sophia Chang's Unlock Her Potential program as part of their 2022 cohort. Her other notable achievements include: —Winner of a Fulbright Grant to research Kpop in Seoul, South Korea for one year —Placements in contests like the International Songwriting Competition, GRAMMY Amplifier, JBL EON One Take —Self-produced & engineered album "Slow Bloom" receiving 200K+ streams worldwide —850% listener growth and 1277% streaming growth within a month via indie music strategy —Lauded in press as "a rare voice, immense storyteller, music creator and vocalist." mesmi also runs SOUND OFFF (formerly AsiAM), a music blog and online space dedicated to highlighting Asian Americans in the modern music industry (songwriters, producers, engineers, artists, etc.). SOUND OFFF began out of the witnessed need to increase AsAm visibility and strengthen ties within the community, with its consequent focuses being on original AAPI-related music and in-depth creative profiles. Along with the arts, mesmi cares deeply about social justice, community, and sustainability. As an Asian American, she also looks forward to helping continue bridging Western and Eastern culture, especially as the international community continues to become more and more connected.

Mesmi's Experience

Through my company VATOCA Studios, I have executed and assisted with production, recording and consulting for multiple music projects. My work touches on both creative aspects (music, performance and branding) as well as the music industry and business. Some of my most recent engagements and happenings include: a 3-hour workshop on music rights and royalties at UC Riverside; a song placement in Season 4 of “Good Trouble” (Hulu). Much of my experience originates from my own creative work, wearing the many hats of an independent artist: I have self-produced and mix engineered my past three projects, enacting the entire process from writing, production, editing and mixing to marketing strategy and release. This includes my latest project, the pandemic-released album Slow Bloom, which has received 200K+ Spotify plays and was described by press as “powerful, epic, yet fragile and beautiful.” Internationally, I have worked as a songwriter/topliner and vocalist with a number of electronic producers/DJs, collaborating on tracks released through multiple indie labels. As a musician, I have contributed my skills in vocals, guitar and piano to other artist’s projects and tracks as well. Throughout the breadth of work, I am known for my writing skills, intense attention to detail and imaginative artistic taste, often exhibited in evocative soundscapes, unique textures, emotive focus and impactful arrangement. I am passionate about uplifting my fellow female, AAPI & BIPOC communities, and the power of culture, music and the arts.
