About DIANA CAMACHO

DJ Papalotl aka Buttahfly is a multi-media artist where her foremost passion is mixing music of all eclectic styles; her dj specialty: Reggae Roots and Dancehall. In 1995, after living a year in Jamaica, a dj friend schooled her on how to cut and mix on Technics 1200’s. Since then, DJ Papalotl has taken her turntable skills into clubs, festivals, cultural music gigs, art exhibits, theatre, and comedy shows bringing a unique flavor to any event that she’s called upon to play. At the Claremont Colleges, Papalotl, then known as Lady D, progressed from djing college parties to mixing Reggae Dancehall live on Pomona College’s radio station KSPC 87.9 FM. Eventually, Papalotl spun at clubs outside the college area and for theatre shows for Chicano cultural plays. Taking the untraditional route into the music scene, Papalotl expanded her audio technical skills. As a result by 2000, Papalotl earned a Certification in Audio Recording Engineering at Sound Masters Lab in North Hollywood, California, trained to mix music on Digidesign’s multitrack audio recording software, ProTools. Later in 2001, Papalotl opened Galeria Coyolxauhqui, named after the indigenous Aztec goddess of the moon. The gallery hosted a Thursday Hip Hop Open Mic and Reggae Fridays where she was resident dj. Papalotl organized events combining music, theatre and visual art for “edutainment” purposes and positive good vibes. As Director, dj, and sound engineer, Papalotl coordinated with other promoters to generate income. During this time, Papalotl expanded her dj abilities to include Latin, Afro Beat, Hip Hop and other underground styles of music. Afterwards, Papalotl organized health fairs with artists, musicians, health education organizations, community activists, and businesses to sponsor Rise, a world music event that was held in 2004 and 2005 via the Los Angeles City Parks and Recreation in El Sereno Park and Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights to promote wellness for medically at risk groups, as well as offer job assistance through Employment Mobile Units. Naturally, DJ Papalotl always played for the diverse crowds of people at these festivals both as a DJ and as a back up vocalist and keyboardist for a live band. In 2004 and 2005, Papalotl worked for Teatro Chusma’s Mexican-American version of The Wizard of Oz called The Wizard of Aztlan. She mixed live during the play production. In addition, she delivered sound cues, and in the second production, was promoted to Stage Manager, directing and playing music, sound, live foley, spotlight and light cues, as well as handle the responsibility of all production cues and stage direction, and acted in skits. She produced videos for promotion and backdrops for skits. She’s also has taught theatre workshops to all ages and has provided scriptwriting for skits and plays. Along the way, Papalotl continued djing for venues around Los Angeles. She played for Queens Corner at the Little Temple in Hollywood on Sundays, and doing after hours joints in lofts and warehouses in Downtown LA for The Lyons Den promoted by reggae singer Hawaiian Lyon. By 2007, her notoriety as a female DJ landed her the dj spot for Hip Hop/Reggae FEMC’s Guerrilla Queenz where she tripled as dj, sound tech, and vocalist (singer/rapper). Half a year later, she became a permanent stage manager/performer for Teatro Chusma. Working simulatenously with both Guerrilla Queenz and Teatro Chusma landed Papalotl on dj, performer and audio engineer tours throughout the U.S. and Mexico! She was resident dj for Irie Tuesdays at the Five Star Bar in Downtown Los Angeles. She also worked with Inspiring Entertainment in Hollywood off the Sunset Strip playing Hip Hop and Reggae; likewise at the Haha Comedy Club in Studio City, CA, alongside featured comics such as Kiki Melendez, Joey Coco Diaz and Alex Reymundo. IE had her sound tech and dj at The Libertine Lounge in Hollywood for International Reggae Singer Pato Banton and local Reggae Disc Jockey Chuck Foster from Pacifica Radio 90.7 FM. Additonally, Papalotl occasionally provided back up vocals and played percussion for local bands and international performer HECTOR GUERRA of PACHAMAMA CREW, and is recognized as part of the PACHAMAMA LA crew as a DJ, percussionist, and Aztec Dancer. As of 2012, Papalotl was given her own internet radio show, entitled the BUTTAHFLY FX show that featured guest artists. The show launched on grassroots Hip Hop station HUSKEYRADIO.com now known as DIGGINDAILY.com. It also streamed out of Jamaica’s Kingston12 WiFi Radio on kingston12.net on a WI-FI Radio network. This music revue show highlighted local, national, and international Reggae bands, singers, rappers, Hip Hop groups, DJ’s, Selectas and producers. The show ‘s guests included Latin American Reggae Queen ALIKA (live from LA and NYC), Dancehall sensation, MR. VEGAS and his protégé JOVI ROCKWELL, phone interview with BadGyal CE’CILE live from Jamaica, Reggae Veteran RANKIN JOE, England’s staple TIPPA IRIE along with SAXON SOUND, Hip Hop lyricist and producer MAD LION, East LA’s Latin Reggae band QUINTO SOL, HECTOR GUERRA of PACHAMAMA CREW – who was the show’s first guest – and a host of raw talented artists from all over Southern California, Mexico, South America, and France! Transmissions took place out of the BUTTAHFLY FX studios in Downtown Los Angeles, as well as on the road in venues in LA, NYC & France. SHINEHEAD was also an invited guest in September 2012. Since then, SHINEHEAD parked his vinyl crates at the BUTTAHFLY FX studio and has been co-hosting as Reggae/Hip Hop selectah, freestyle lyricist, and singer ever since! He opens the show before the slated guest(s); Dj Papalotl closes the show by spinning Reggae Dancehall or Hip Hop music. That union has brought forth a series of guest spots on Internet and live radio throughout Los Angeles, New York, and Europe for both SHINEHEAD and DJ PAPALOTL. In August 2013, SHINEHEAD invited DJ PAPALOTL to ROTOTOM in Spain, where she played on LEGAL SHOT’S soundsystem. That festival brought a European connection that fruitioned into a second BUTTAHFLY FX show on DUBFORCERADIO.com catered to an English audience in December 2o13, and had legendary FESTUS COXSONE of COXSONE SOUND playing his radio show before the BUTTAHFLY FX show and boasted guests like MR. WILLIAMZ and GENERAL JAH MIKEY. Now known as the VINYL IS FINAL show, you can hear the show on NICEUPRADIO.com. Likewise, working on the JAMROCK CRUISE in October 2014, Caribbean entertainment company IRISH & CHIN requested an interview of SHINEHEAD which led to KINGSTON12 HI-FI being offered a radio show slot on Sundays 5pm PDT/8pm EDT on irishandchain.com’s SOUNDCHAT RADIO on REEEWIND SUNDAYS, a day set out for programming catering to vintage Reggae and Dancehall music. This began at the end of January 2015. Entitling their 2-Hour show #SUNDAYREGGAESCHOOL, SHINEHEAD and DJ PAPALOTL aim to fluidly spin classic and classy tunes from the vintage to the new! This relationship with Irish and Chin has led to events in New York and Japan, as well as a second radio show 7pm PDT/10pm EDT on International Roll Out Wednesdays, which airs over the airwaves in London and Birmingham on Unique Radio UK and Sting Dem Radio, respectively . This show has also been picked up by LA Record Label Delicious Vinyl on Dashradio.com/Delicious Vinyl.

DIANA's Experience

I consider myself a multi-media artist, as I have worked in a variety of aspects of music, theatre, and dj/turntablism. Additionally, I have experience creating graphics using a photo/video/desktop publishing software/apps for flyers, posters, stickers, merchandise logos, etc. Given my many years also as an educator in the public school system, I used my skills to assist and produce musical and cultural events, thus encouraging the arts in low socio-economic areas of Los Angeles. That helped me in facilitating acting workshops to children, adolescents and adults, as working with the community was an experience I’ve employed in most of my multiple careers. As such, I’ve worked with community-minded musical/theatre projects that allowed me to use my DJ and audio engineering skills to assist in production, i.e. play the soundbytes during skits or back up a hip hop set by playing the beats as the DJ. All these diverse abilities and skills of mine got me the attention of an iconic Reggae/Hip Hop artist, and since 2012, I’ve worked in merchandise/promotional production, as well as maintain all our social media/website production platforms. Because I also tour with SHINEHEAD, I have to DJ and audio tech the set up, as we travel with vinyl, an IPAD, a laptop, and sound FX modules that I’m responsible for setting up prior to our shows. I’ve accompanied SHINEHEAD to a variety of countries and Reggae festivals throughout Europe, Japan, Jamaica, The Bahamas, and the US (namely New York and Miami), and have been in charge of tech and merchandise, as well as play (DJ) a set or back up SHINEHEAD during a performance set. Moreover, I am the videographer of the events, which I post to my YouTube channel Youtube.com/papalotlbutterfly. Currently when not traveling to perform, SHINEHEAD and myself pka KINGSTON12 Hi-Fi produce and play on three internet radio shows weekly and one airs live over the airwaves of London and Birmingham, UK!
