About Michela McDonagh

Mhic combines electronic, avant-garde, and pop music to create a new landscape of sound. A self-proclaimed modern poet electronique, Mhic’s early musical influences were a kaleidoscope of rock, pop, world, chorale and experimental, instilling her deep love for the poetry of noise. “I love a weird sound,” she says. It’s inherent in the fabric of her work as she explores the boundaries of her mantra, “push buttons ‘til you feel something.” A late-blooming songwriter, Mhic was inspired to create her first loop after a life-altering concert with the artist MUNA. For the first time, Mhic recognized the potential that electronic music had beyond club tunes and dance beats—that it could evoke emotion in a way that hadn’t yet been explored. Her mentor, Paula Cole, encouraged her to embrace a different kind of songwriting; where form and structure take a back seat to emotion, vulnerability, and truth-telling—themes which are the heart of Mhic’s lyrical journey. As a founding member and songwriter for the Shirzans, an all-female band based in Boston, Mhic discovered the power of creating and collaborating with other women. As her confidence and experience grew, so did her attraction to electronic music—a musical lane that has not traditionally embraced or extended itself to women. “Electronic music gives me the chance to color in between the notes, to explore an unlimited palette of sounds and beats to create something human and truthful and real.” Mhic paints a landscape of sound, and she invites the listener to step inside that landscape alongside her.
